Apartment Projects

Orphans International provides safe housing and life-skills tutoring to young women after leaving the Hand of Help Orphanage.

Stepping Stones Apartment
Oi’s Stepping Stone Project provides a 2-year transitional home for young women who leave Hand of Help orphanage at the age of 18 or 19 – a time when they are most vulnerable. In Oi’s transitional home the young women receive training in independent living i.e. tutoring in areas such as budgeting, nutrition management, sanitation, workplace-related challenges, dealing with bureaucracy, etc. They also receive a monthly allowance from which they learn how to budget food, and household essentials keeping the apartment in good order, cleaning and doing their own washing, ironing, and cooking. We also help them find employment or access job- training courses.

It is a small project but has nevertheless been providing safety for 20 vulnerable young women since its inception in 2006. In 2017 it is still providing a safe home to four girls and they are doing really well. Of, course we can never fill the gap left by a lack of parental support, but we can still be by their side and help them transition successfully from institutionalisation to independence. With encouragement, guidance, love and moral support, they get a chance to build their lives.

2017 Update
The current girls involved in the project:

01My name is Mihaela Baltă and I am 18 years old. I have 4 younger sisters and two older step brothers. My father doesn’t have a permanent job, and can only find temporary work. My mother takes care of the family. I am living in the apartment because my parents cannot afford to pay the schools fees and the transportation from village to town. My dream is to become a police officer, to protect the ones who cannot protect themselves. I want to thank you very much for all the support you give to me.

02My name is Mihaela Andries and I am 18 years old. I grew up in a large family, I have 7 siblings, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. I am the youngest one and I am living in the flat. My parents separated many years ago, my mother is taking care of all the children. I want to be a waiter/chef in a restaurant. Annabel is giving me the chance to live in the apartment so I can finish my education. I have learned to live independently and to cook even for the other girls. All of them say I have a real talent in cooking, which must be true as they eat everything I cook!!! Thank you for being part of my life preparation, making it possible for me to focus on school and training. God bless you!

03My name is Cozmina-Catalina Selegeanu and I am 18 years old. I am an orphan, both my parents died years ago and my 3 other siblings and myself had struggled to survive. One day were found by the staff from Hand of Help Orphanage and they took my older brother and I in, my younger sister was adopted by my Auntie and my other older brother went to an Uncle. My dream is to become a tailor, even a fashion designer and to be involved in the fashion industry. I live in the apartment, which is a real blessing, as I can focus on school and learn to live independently. Thank you for your great support and I look forward to see you soon!

04My name is Juliana Babiuc and I am 20 years old. My parents died when I was 12. I am a student in the second year of University, studying to become a Pharmacy Assistant. I really appreciate all your effort and Orphans International’s support over the years.
